Topic > The Cuban Missile Crisis - 938

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day period during the Cold War, between the United States, Cuba, and the Soviet Union, that caused great unrest around the world. The causes of the crisis date back to the late 1950s, when tension between the two nations and the United States began in earnest. On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro wins the revolution and defeats General Fulgencro Batista and on February 1, 1959. 1959, Castro becomes president and gains full control of Cuba. After becoming president, Castro also began to heavily tax US products, this led Eisenhower to impose trade restrictions against Cuba. Cuba openly declared itself communist and began to establish diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. This did not please the United States very much, which decided to end the foreign aid program with Cuba. Cuba becomes extremely aware of its dependence on the US product. On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated and became the 35th president of the United States. After being president for only a couple of days, Kennedy was informed of Eisenhower's secret plan for the CIA to train Cuban exiles for the invasion and overthrow of Castro. Kennedy was skeptical of the plan but approved it anyway. On April 18, 1961, the attempted invasion of southern Cuba took place, and as Kennedy expected, the invasion failed horribly. The CIA underestimated the number of troops and the extent of its weapons in Cuba. Kennedy took responsibility for the loss, still disappointed, stating that the United States "seems fools to our friends, scoundrels to our enemies, and incompetents to others." . As a result, the United States paid a staggering $53 million ransom for the release of exile survivors captured... middle of paper... on the shores of Cuba. Later this day President Kennedy receives a letter from Khrushchev stating that the US quarantine caused “a serious threat to the peace and security of the people”. Following the letter, President Kennedy withdraws the quarantine line. On October 25, President Kennedy sends a letter to Prime Minister Khrushchev in response to his letter sent on October 24. Kennedy's letter states in the letter that he doesn't understand why Khrushchev can't understand where he's coming from because, as far as Kennedy was told, there were no nuclear weapons placed in Cuba. President Kennedy basically believes that the Soviet Union is the main cause of the crisis. During the next Ex Comm meeting, officials will discuss whether they will remove the missile from Türkiye. They come to the conclusion that the United States will move the missiles only if Cuba removes the Soviet missiles.
