Laius had the child's ankles stabbed (plus his given name: Oedipus meaning swollen feet) and he was left to die in the mountains. The shepherd to whom it was given did not want to let it die. Then, he took the child to the kingdom of Corinth. King Polybus and Queen Merope also had no children and decided to adopt little Oedipus. When he was an adult, someone said that he was not actually the son of the king and queen. He set out on a journey to see the Oracle at Delphi and to discover the truth. When he went there, the Oracle told him that he would kill his father and marry his mother. After hearing this, Oedipus vowed to never return to Corinth to ensure that the prophecy never came true. Oedipus decided to start his new life in the kingdom of Thebes. During the journey he met a man and his charioteer. Oedipus argued with the man about who had the right of way.
