Topic > Personal Experience: Australia's National Identity

Today I will tell you about my opinion on Australia's national identity. For countless years the world has viewed Australians as a bunch of outback bogans, with limited education and a strange addiction to vegemite and beer. Australians are a strange collection of people who only ever greet each other using phrases like "Good morning mate" and "How's it going", but also throwing in as many strange and unintelligent phrases as possible. This is definitely not the natural approach that Australians take to greeting their fellow Aussies on the street or on the phone, nor is the average Australian's vocabulary made up primarily of slang and swear words. People from other cultures around the world appear to have adopted a number of stereotypes about both Australians and their country. Australia's national identity needs to change from supporting the stereotype of the outback Australian bogan, to supporting the modern reality of its people, who are actually well educated and middle class. People from all over the world have clung to classic stereotypes about the average Australian being completely bogan and completely careless. It is also believed that Australians have adopted the abandoned trend of the perfectly shaped mullet to accompany a nice pair of high quality flip flops, football shorts and a cork hat, complete with tank top and squat. Australia is described as a predominantly male population who is extremely relaxed, loves the outdoors, lives on a diet consisting mainly of beer, is working class and has a limited level of education. When in reality Australia has come a long way from sheep shearing in the outback, with over 90% of the population living in... middle of paper... ring the famous cork hats and tank tops. Each student is an individual with their own unique aspirations and characteristics, none of which are shown in Banjo Paterson's poem, nor depict any signs of Australian stereotypes. Classic stereotypes of Australia are now obsolete and must evolve into modern standards and realities. The average Australian does not resemble these falsely portrayed images, takes on a more sophisticated and academic personality and is realistically much closer to the people shown in the Bond University advert. Australians are more city oriented and the majority of the population has a job and a home. Australia's national identity must change from supporting the stereotype of the outback Australian bogan to supporting the modern reality of its people, who are actually well educated and civilized..
