Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the 1980s? The crazy hairstyles, the new and improved things that were created made this time alive and fun. Being born in the 80's would have been a privilege, who wouldn't want to be known as “The decade that defined…. "US!" The 1980s was a decade that began on January 1, 1980 and ended on December 31, 1989. This decade was a great social and economic time for the people living in the 1980s. The world was becoming more developed as was everyone in it. This decade has become the “Look at me” generation of status seekers. The 1980s created a new generation of billionaires and money makers. “The decade began with double-digit inflation, Reagan declared a war on drugs, Kermit didn't find it easy to be an ecologist, hospital costs rose, we lost many, many of our best talent to AIDS which before the end of the decade spread throughout the world. black and Hispanic women and unemployment increased,” according to Peggy Whitely of Lone Star College. While it seemed like all fun and games this time, there were a lot of problems. People say we lost the meaning of “We” and suddenly it became “I”. Citizens were realizing that you cannot depend on others around you; they were coming up with new ideas and inventions to allow things to be more efficient. Although the 1980s were a huge change for the American people, fads and fashion struggled, as did inventions. These two things will be some of the most historic, yet fascinating, parts of the 80s generation in American history. The first topic I want to discuss is inventions. It's one thing to think of an invention, but making it happen is a whole different story. While challenging, it seemed like everyone in the '80s thought... mid-paper... that cocaine would be too, but not in this case. A gram of cocaine cost between $100 and $125. Cocaine and crack were so popular in the 1980s that they beat alcohol as the most abused drug in the 1986 survey, which was pretty impressive. Associations such as "Just Say No to Drugs" and "DARE" were introduced to reduce cocaine use. There is so much more to say about the 80s when it comes to drugs, but if you really do your research, cocaine is what defined this decade. The 80s are glorified for its crazy clothes and amazing inventions. The '80s had their ups and downs, but for the most part it was the decade that changed everything and everyone, for better and for worse. People were proud of their fashions, fads, and inventions in the 1980s; in fact, everyone was proud of these three things.
