Many nurses who provide patient care are required to work long hours in a recent study of nurses (Geiger-Brown, et al., 2006 ) who found that more than 1/3 of nurses routinely work 12 or more hours a day. There are also some safety concerns for nurses who have to work such long shifts, long working hours can lead to increased rates of musculoskeletal disorders, such as neck and back pain. Some nurses often consider fatigue a normal part of their job, but when it starts to interfere with job performance then a serious problem occurs. Being understaffed also plays a serious role in why most nurses have to work such long hour shifts, you might think you could never have enough nurses in one shift, but believe it or not there 'it's always a shortage. Having to work so many hours and feeling burnt out can lead to feeling extremely stressed, being so stressed is not good for patient satisfaction. Working such long hours can be emotionally and mentally taxing, allowing nurses to have shorter shifts can improve their performance and also increase patient satisfaction
