In this Shakespearean comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" two equally stubborn characters of Beatrice and Benedick are introduced between the rather normal relationship of the characters Hero and Claudio. Shakespeare presents Beatrice and Benedick's obstinacy towards the rather obligatory act of marriage and also their particularly similar personalities which give reason to their familiar act of arguing; it does so by also presenting two characters who are completely interested in marriage and who are unlikely to be intellectually capable of arguing in a similar way. As the story unfolds, both characters remain combative with each other, but as love gets the better of them, they begin to reveal that somewhat secret sensitivity amid the complications of their hearts. In this essay we will explore key scenes that contribute to this, as well as general changes in characters and techniques used to imply certain ideas. The opening of the play thoroughly explores the stubbornness of both Beatrice and Benedick and further presents the thoughts and wisdom of each of them in a way that seems almost immutable. When both characters interact for the first time, we see an explicit sign of a previous possible relationship. «You always end up with a jade makeup. I've known you since once' Beatrice implies that they knew each other quite well from the past and that she thought he had changed. The “jade trick,” meaning a stubborn horse that refuses to move forward, also illustrates Benedick's character. Knowing each other previously provides a pragmatic basis for a serious future relationship as both are able to work on what they already know about each other rather than nothing. This introduction to the work is the first idea that pers...... middle of paper...... It presents these two characters who seem to be unable to court and develops their relationship through a joke, but also a potential past. Their great battles of wits and advanced intellectuality make their relationship more unstable but unique. The significance of placing this relationship among the simple ones between Hero and Claudio makes their relationship stand out as it highlights the fact that Hero and Claudio can easily show it while Beatrice and Benedick contain it within themselves. The techniques used in the film versions and in the live show at the Old Vic accentuate many of the key moments. Overall, considering all the common points, I believe that the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick has much more intensity than that between Hero and Claudio whose love has not developed but is just the simple occurrence of love at first sight..
