Topic > The Three Major Events of the 1960s - 1340

Which three events best represent the 1960s and why? I believe the Vietnam War (1954-1975) was one of the most important events of the 1960s because it was a highly controversial and widely covered event in the media. Vietnam was the first war to be filmed by journalists for the public to see on a daily basis. Before this, everything was filmed by the government and edited to show the great work we were doing, but in Vietnam journalists didn't have this kind of restriction on their filming. Some journalists would go to the front lines and give the American public a glimpse into the horrors of war. This negative press that the war got, usually portrayed the American soldier in Vietnam as a bloodthirsty savage, who would shoot anything that stood in his path. In reality this was not the case, but public opinion did not know this and quickly came to the conclusion that the war was unjust. Many felt that America was meddling in another country's civil war and that American soldiers should start being pulled out of Vietnam and returned to their families. Men across the country were also very unhappy because the draft could take you away from everyday life and you could be sent to Vietnam to fight for a cause they didn't believe in and do nothing about it or risk spending time in prison and/or paying a heavy fine. The American government thought the war only happened because they were fighting communists who had different views than our capitalist-run country, but the American people still thought we should leave Vietnam. Another major event was the 1968 Democratic Convention held in Chicago where some huge decisions were made regarding where and how the Democrats would lead the country if they won the presidential election... middle of the paper... which yes can they provide jobs to a quarter of a million unemployed Americans? If you succeed in this enormous feat, you will give me many more reasons why you are my favorite president. This New Deal you proposed offers many bright spots and programs such as the Public Works Administration (PWA), which you believe will build many government-funded structures such as roads, buildings and dams. Another program that I found quite interesting was Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RPC). This program seemed like a good way to boost the economy because you are lending large sums of money to companies which allows them to employ many people and slowly but surely boost the economy. From listening to all these fantastic ideas that you have, Mr. President, I support you one hundred percent and I believe that we will soon get out of this crisis. Best regards,
