Topic > The need to survive according to Abraham Maslow...

Human survival can be divided into a hierarchy of needs according to Abraham Maslow. His theory states that our five basic needs for survival are breathing, food, water, sleep and homeostasis. The needs to survive can rely solely on these needs if practiced correctly. With food being an important part of survival, the human race should consider the benefits of the foods it consumes on a daily basis. The education system plays an important role in children's development, school departments around the world are responsible for what students learn and eat at school. The school system should offer students healthy meals to promote a healthy lifestyle. Obesity is the condition of being overweight, childhood obesity is now considered a major factor leading to long-term and short-term health effects. According to the Center of Disease Control Prevention, this disease is linked to many problems such as bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as low self-esteem. Obesity is more likely to occur due to a poor diet and little or no physical activity. Children between the ages of 5 and 18 cannot control what they are fed at home and at school. Their eating habits are based on what parents and schools can provide. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, in 2010, nearly 15 percent of American families were unable to purchase adequate food to meet their health needs. Parents cannot afford to feed their families healthy foods, if the school system provided at least two healthy meals: breakfast and lunch, children would receive about half the nutrition they need to live a healthy life. School systems have the power to invest in healthier lifestyles simply by changing the menu. The school…middle of paper…constituting juice boxes containing approximately 4 0z containing 15 grams of sugar, 15 grams of total carbohydrates and 0% vitamin A with water, students would have a healthier alternative on which the students agree with. Another way to offer variety is to serve foods that vegetarians and vegans would eat, such as fresh-cut salads. Fruits and vegetables are also foods that could be added to improve school lunches. Overall, school lunch needs to change for the better, and these changes can be made with the help of the school system. With these changes the lunch system will improve many lives and reduce the risk of diseases such as obesity at such a young age. Food is a powerful supplement in life: "The food you eat can be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison" - Ann Wigmore. The school should change the food menu to help have a better tomorrow.
