The use of symbolic hand gestures, known as "mudras", helps convey ideas. The Buddha in Figure 2 of the Appendices uses mudras very similarly to the piece Shiva as Lord of the Dance (Nataraja). The right hand of both sculptures in Figures 1 and 2 shows “abhayamudra,” meaning “fear not” (Doyle, Goodman. “Lesson Plan: Buddhism and Hindu Art from India—A Comparative Look.”). This type of mudra is formed by raising the right hand to shoulder height, with the palm of the hand facing outward and the fingertips pointing upwards.
