1. IntroductionThe energy crisis that South Africa is currently facing is on the verge of leading the country to economic collapse. This leads to every single household of a South African citizen having to start saving energy and using it efficiently. When one house starts saving, it will actually affect the whole community, the country and eventually the whole nation. This will not only improve the country's economy but will also allow other neighboring countries that currently do not have access to electricity to have the opportunity to have electricity as well (Davidson, Mwakasonda, 2003). Part of this investigation is to introduce and improve current ways of using energy efficiently by considering a residential accommodation, using as a reference 30 people living on the same floor.2. Background StatementSouth Africa experienced a rainy season, during which heavy rains occurred which ruined the main source of coal supply. Due to this incident, the country is facing a blackout (Blaine, 2014). As Eskom is the only energy company supplying 95% of the country's energy (Blaine, 2014), it is also experiencing difficulties in meeting South Africa's energy demand, as demand is expected to be double the current level in 2030 (South Africa, 2012). Eskom also stated that the industrial sector has also contributed to reducing its consumption, but this is certainly not enough.[3] During peak hours, there are two power plants that provide backup power, but the problem is that the dam levels at these two power plants are low. South Africa also imports insufficient energy from Zimbabwe.3.
