Since the appearance of Rock and Roll in the 1950s, people have developed an aversion towards it; not only what it represents, but also the way it sounds: fast, chaotic and “dangerous”. Rock and roll in the 1950s represented an uncontrolled group of teenagers whose attitude became more private, reserved, defensive and sometimes disrespectful. These changes in adolescent behavior were part of an intense sociological shift that society suffered after World War II. An era in which many distinct factors, including Rock and Roll, collaborated to create a generation gap in American families that continues to prevail to this day. A large psychological gap was created between parents and children, and years later, this difference between the older and younger generations was called the “generation gap.” People, especially parents, didn't understand these intense changes their children were going through. It seemed that their teenagers were becoming more and more rebellious and defensive and listening to rock and roll was, in their opinion, the main cause of all this rebellion. It was not only the behavior and attitude of teenagers that changed, but factors such as their fashion sense, movements and social environments also started to be influenced. Parents targeted music as the root cause and prohibited their children from watching certain videos and listening to certain songs mainly because they believed that these songs were too suggestive and would corrupt the minds of teenagers. Before World War II, teenagers were forced to take life seriously. Music in that period was the symbol of youth changes as it widened the gap created between adults and adolescents. Teenagers, through rock and roll lyrics and artists, found inspiration to act and behave rebelliously and immaturely. They wanted to prove to their parents that they were independent and distinguished themselves from previous generations. But mostly they wanted to shake, shake and roll.
