Edgar Allan Poe's poem “Alone” is a reflection of his childhood. The first lines tell the reader that the speaker has never felt akin to other children. As they continue reading, it is evident to the reader that someone dear to them died when they were young. Looking at the diction, symbolism, and allusions used in this poem, we can see that the underlying theme is that lost love can cause desolation. The choice of words used in this poem helps portray a mood of isolation. “And all that I have loved, I have loved alone” (8). What the speaker is saying with this quote is that everything they found interest in, no one else did, and therefore they had no one to share their life experiences with. From a young age, the speaker felt like an outcast, and the loss of his loved one only intensified his loneliness. "Then - in my childhood, at the dawn, of a very stormy life - was drawn, from every depth of good and evil, the mystery that still binds me" (9-12). The speaker felt that they had no control over their destiny. Whatever happened, good or bad, the speaker felt abandoned...
