The Sound of Music In 1965, Robert Wise introduced the world to his box office hit, The Sound of Music. Over time it has become known as one of the most loved and well-known musicals of all time. Shortly after its release it won numerous Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Adapted Soundtrack, Best Film Editing, Best Musical Film, Best Color Cinematography and Best Costume Design (Freiden par3). The film is based on the true story of the VonTrapp family and allows the audience to relive the family experience and escape from Nazism shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. To ask whether or not this film is an opportunity for Austria to exonerate itself, we must first understand how the film creates an Americanized image of Austria's role in Nazism. American audiences will definitely be affected by this film differently than German or Austrian audiences who were involved firsthand.
