Multicultural Field Trip In the city of Columbia, South Carolina, there are few multicultural centers available to the public. Therefore, in place of multicultural centers, Columbia and surrounding cities hold annual festivals where many visitors and tourists from other cities and states visit to join the festivities. Columbia sponsors the Greek Festival each year, North Myrtle Beach hosts the Irish Italian Festival, Charleston sponsors the Maritime Heritage Festival, Greenville's Edisto Indian Cultural Festival, and Spartanburg hosts its annual International Festival, just to name a few. The multicultural festival that this essay will discuss is the annual Spartanburg International Festival with artifacts and a breakdown of cultures. Spartanburg is a very historic city that is located approximately ninety miles northwest of Columbia, South Carolina. This small town was built in the late 17th century and was named after the Revolutionary War militia Spartan Regiment of South Carolina Americana (Lewis, 2007). Although this small city, Spartan gradually expanded into what is now a rather large and diverse city, where various cultures began a connection to build the city currently called Spartanburg. In Spartanburg, there are people from over seventy countries residing in this city and over one hundred international businesses that make Spartanburg their home (City of Spartanburg, 2011). These numbers represent the multicultural diversity that Spartanburg has within a twenty-square-mile radius, which led city representatives to propose a diverse festival. The festival was well thought out with the initiative to showcase the cultures that reside in the city of Spartanburg.
