To begin, the AFN gives a voice to all of Canada's First Nations. This occurs through the various sectors, namely the Women's Council and the National Youth Council. The Assembly is very effective as it is run by First Nations people for First Nations people rather than the government controlling all aspects of their lives as they used to do before the formation. The assembly is also a voice for all First Nations compared to before, when the original organizations focused only on their own community rather than the culture as a whole. It is also effective because it was formed during a time when both the federal and provincial governments were beginning to realize that what they had done to Indigenous people was nothing short of cultural genocide. The internal structure of the AFN also allows the organization to be effective as there are leaders at both the federal and provincial levels. There is also representation from each First Nations community at the Assembly of First Nations. It also provides representation to the National Brotherhood as the Assembly of First Nations has essentially adopted the organization as their Secretariat. Another reason it is so effective is that it was founded by educated First Nations leaders and that the Great Chiefs had done previous work in
