Topic > Deception: The Invisible Cancer of American Culture

Ericsson explains that dismissal is a type of lie you tell yourself in which you ignore feelings, perceptions, or even hard facts (341). Americans use the act of firing all the time and have more recently been affected by the recent US recession. One of the main reasons why the economy collapsed was the American real estate bubble. Many Americans saw this as an opportunity to earn more money, but unfortunately that didn't happen. Many lost their homes and caused a huge disruption to the global economy. This is all for a reason: Americans have simply ignored the fact that they can't pay for homes and have made most Americans out of the place they call home. In summary, if Americans had not ignored the fact that they could not pay for their homes, the recession would have been a little lighter than it actually was. Similarly, the real estate bubble is similar to Michael Lewis's “Liar's Poker,” in which two of Lewis' colleagues bet and bluff to win the game (653-657). "Liar's Poker" is a great personification of how Wall Street works. Most stockbrokers gamble and bluff in economic situations, however, gambling and bluffing can only take you so far.
