Topic > Night of Elie Wiesel - 682

In the book Night of Elie Wiesel, humanity is a recurring theme. Humanity can be defined in many ways. It may be the disposition to do good, or it may be the human race. In the Night the theme of humanity is the disposition to do good. In the book, Elie loses and regains his humanity. Ultimately, he retains his humanity, but loses some of it after events such as his father's death. Elie manages to retain his humanity because he clings to his father, feels sympathy for the people in the camps, and keeps the faith. Elie retains his humanity at the end even though he loses it halfway through the book. Elie maintains his humanity by clinging to his father. Although he loses many other aspects of his humanity in the camps, he does not lose his father's influence. An example of this is when Elie's father is a victim of selection. “'Don't talk like that, father' I was on the verge of bursting into sobs. 'I don't want you to say these things'” (75) is his reaction when his father greets him. This shows that even when there was no hope for his father, he still remained human. If he had no humanity at all, he would have simply said goodbye and left for his job. Also, his father tries to give him a spoon to help him, but Elie doesn't want it. This shows his humanity because he still wants his father to have the chance to sell him and live. If he had no humanity left, he would have taken the spoon. In the quote it says that he is “on the verge of sobbing,” which means he is definitely crying for his father. This shows his humanity because he can still cry. If he were unable to grieve, he would have no humanity. Humanity is the disposition to do good. Elie holds onto him because he wants his fa... middle of paper... im because he did as he said and waited. A person without humanity would have simply dismissed the comment as nothing and planned revenge in the camps. Because Elie had humanity, he remained silent. Elie retained his humanity thanks to a woman and her words. In the book Night Elie retains his humanity thanks to the people around him. If he had not been influenced by these people, he would never have made it through the camps. His father made him understand his humanity, while the French woman gave him hope. The hanging boy only strengthened his humanity. Elie maintains his humanity both in the fields and outside because he is influenced by other people. If he had been surrounded by complete strangers, he would have had a much harder time maintaining his humanity. Humanity is the disposition to do good even when all is lost. Elie does this all night.
