Topic > Racial Prejudice and White Supremacy - 1827

White supremacy is a system used to maintain the dominance and superiority of whites over minorities. While racism and white supremacy are not as evident as in the past, there has been a new development of racism, moving in the form of notions of colorblindness, assimilation, and the model minority. Color blindness is a racial ideology that decreases discrimination by not seeing skin color. However, this causes racial bias because white privilege still exists in society. In other words, we already adopt a world of Whiteness as it is an unobserved notion of orientation as it shapes relations of power, personal identity, and objects in space. Furthermore, without recognizing cultures, it is not possible to accept the unique differences among humankind. Assimilation is the process by which different cultures come to resemble one group. Therefore, assimilation was not done for unity and acceptance, but to force a culture to fit a limited perspective. It was a process of forced cultural abandonment of religious or ethnic minority groups in order to establish a larger community. Finally, the model minority is a group that can achieve a “higher” degree of socioeconomic success than the average minority, including income, low crime rates, and stability. This causes separation and conflict between all minority groups because it is an act of superiority. While these concepts are viewed as positive by society, racism and white supremacy have transcended into contemporary institutional barriers of prejudice, contributed to by factors internal to our own minority communities such as assimilation, color blindness, and model minority. “Color is something white people deeply desire, but cannot possess.” (Welsing). Whites are known to have better access to funds, property, and education than other minority groups. Additionally, whites are given more jobs. However, along with the concept of acceptance, we are contradicted by the idea that race implies competition, which then leads to power, and power can change how we see each other. This causes separation and conflict between all minority groups because there is an act of superiority within our own species. In today's era, the model minority is seen in the Asian-American community. For example, in most universities the population is populated by Caucasians and Asians. Since they belong to the minority hierarchy, they are the ones treated closest to whites, even though all minorities are still considered “inferior”..”
