Topic > Gender Inequality in America - 1460

Gender inequality has swept the United States and assigned numerous different roles to the male and female sexes. According to Leila Aboulela, Minaret, “All my life there have been distinctions: bathrooms for men, bathrooms for women; clothes for men, clothes for women – then, in the end, the graves are identical.” Discrimination places women in different roles and takes away numerous privileges. Yet today in America, after more than a century of struggle by dedicated activists who fought to change these ideals and gain further rights, society's perception of women and their contributions to society have been significantly transformed. Feminist activists began their journey in 1848 when they invented their own form of Declaration of Independence, called the Declaration of Sentiments. This highly crafted document called for equal rights between men and women. Then, in the nineteenth century, these devout women fought against the media. They began to build ways to gain further recognition from their male peers and decided that running for president was the best way to attract the limelight. The media and general public saw this as a misplaced push for women's participation. It violated the traditional view of what the role of women was in society and posed a greater challenge to those who sought nothing more than to change this situation. perception. The opposition feared that a woman in government would change the dynamic of the United States. LET'S TALK ABOUT ROOSEVELTS WIFE!!!!! From here, feminists took a step back and decided to focus on smaller gains. Their first goal was to obtain the right to vote and in 1920 an official change was made to the Constitution declaring women's right to sufficiency... middle of paper... focusing on your work but how you look matters just as much (Wolf 2013). It's all about perception in American society. The United States has made countless strides in improving women's rights. Individuals are starting to apply more ideals to women than just housewives. The company has grown to allow women to intertwine in the bustling city. There's a substantial move to try to move away from judging a woman by her looks rather than her brains. There is still a long way to go for activists to allow women to be perceived equally as men. It will take time to overcome the consideration of females not only for their bodies, but also for their intelligence. However, these dedicated activists will not give up until they can look a man in the eye and truly be seen as an equal. The journey is far from over, but they are far from giving up.
