When they arrive, they find Van Houten to be extremely rude and not what the couple had imagined. Van Houten's assistant had orchestrated the entire visit, as he thought Van Houten would benefit from it. Van Houten turns out to be a drunk, pompous and full of himself. Hazel continues to try to get the answers she so desperately needs, but Van Houten is rude and makes mean comments about Hazel and Augustus. The trip goes horribly and none of Hazel's questions are answered. Van Houten's assistant apologizes for Van Houten and takes Hazel and Augustus on a trip to the Anne Frank House. This scene is a momentous triumph, as Hazel's breathing problems cause her to nearly pass out several times, but she manages to climb all the stairs in the house and see the final level of exhibits. They kiss and the people in the room cheer for them. After the kiss, they return to their hotel room and make love for the first time. The next day Augustus makes a huge confession to Hazel: he's sick again, and the pets' ultrasounds have revealed that the cancer has spread throughout his body. He tells Hazel, though, that he will fight, he will win, and he will stick around for a long time to annoy her. They discuss with each of them Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the meaning of death and illness
