This topic was particularly relevant because it was the start of half term week, a week when students drink a lot of coffee and energy drinks. This event was not as successful as I expected, especially considering that the building where it was held is very busy and has many students passing through it. Very few students, around 5 or 6, actually came to the table to engage in our activity, which was very frustrating. We had also brought a large number of flu kits to distribute while we were there, and that was also very difficult. Students rejected them almost 50% of the time, and so it got to the point where we had to leave them at various locations for future students to pick up. All this was mentioned during our weekly meeting with our supervisors, so we were advised to schedule another health center for this specific topic. This time we'll go somewhere else, ideally out on the quad, so hopefully we'll have more fun. During our meeting we were also given multiple tasks to complete throughout the week. Receive an original essay Tuesday 3/5: I spent most of my day today putting together the Seasonal Affective Disorder bulletin board I put together last week. It took me so long because I had to print everything out on colored paper and then cut and glue everything together before I could even put it on the board. Since SAD is such a common thing here on campus, my supervisors agreed to put my information on the main whiteboard in the waiting room. I had to move the influence board that had been sitting on the whiteboard for the past few months, and overall, this task took a long time. Wednesday 3/6: Today I spent the day working on my gifts for the health center I would like to be running the next day. I did some research and found some articles that have been shown to help students better manage common depressive symptoms, such as play-doh, coloring sheets, and journals. I used my project funds to purchase these items, so today I put them all together in a little kit. I also met with Jessica, one of my supervisors, for my mid-semester evaluation. Here we talked about my capstone, what I had done so far, what I needed to do and how I was going to do it. We both agreed that I had gotten a fair amount done, especially since my topic was more relevant now and would become less and less relevant as the time improved. I created a list of the different assignments I've completed so far, so that both she and my professors could see what I'm working on. Thursday 3/7: Today I started the morning by meeting Teagan Peacock , whois the person who manages BeYouSU social media. We talked about the different content he could use in the coming months and the different events we would organize. Since I and the other interns are all students, I felt this was a great opportunity since we have a better idea of what content students would actually be interested in, compared to non-students. Then I had my SAD health center for the rest of the afternoon, and it went very well. Students seemed really interested in what I was talking about and more students answered my questions correctly than I had anticipated. The students especially liked the items I gave away, because they were very useful. Since it was so close to spring break and many remaining students were preparing for or taking exams, we did not have as many students as we had the previous time at this location. However, we managed to have around 40-43 people take part in our activity, and therefore the event was a success. Friday 3/8: I didn't come today, as I left early in the morning to go home for spring break. Week 9: 3/18-3/22 Monday 3/18: Today was the first day back after spring break and I spent most of the day getting organized and finishing part of my capstone project. I've started working on the presentation I'll give next week at the monthly staff meeting. Since I have already completed much of the research and outreach portion of my capstone, my supervisors and I thought it would be easier if I showed up at the April meeting. Since we are 3 interns, it would be very rushed to all show up at the May meeting, especially since that meeting is quite important to begin with since it is very close to the end of the semester. In order to actually have enough time to present, it was a good idea to bring my presentation forward. My PowerPoint included basic information, exactly what I was studying and the study results I had found. My day concluded with our weekly meeting with our supervisors, from 3 to 4:30 pm. Tuesday 3/19: Today I started working on the tasks I was assigned during the staff meeting the previous day. One of the main tasks was to make some changes to the caffeine brochure I had created for an event. The event was not a great success despite covering an interesting topic, so we planned another event towards the end of the semester. My supervisors made some recommendations, so today I made the changes and completed the necessary research. I also packed more flu kits, since I couldn't attend the packing party that took place at night. I finished the day by going out and filling up condoms at the Women's Building and flu kits at one of the academic buildings. Wednesday 3/20: Today I taught my third workshop for this course, and then spent the rest of the day starting my latest capstone project. I did my normal daily tasks like filling condoms and flu kits at HS. I also spent part of the day reorganizing the condom supply, making sure the refill boxes were full and that the backup supplies were all in the right place. I updated the Excel sheet I had created for supply so that supervisors could see how much we had of each item. Thursday 3/21: Today was Carina's Health Hub, so I spent most of the day helping her prepare for this and help manage it. His topic was antibiotic awareness andget students to learn more about when and how they should use antibiotics. His event was a success and we were able to leave earlier than expected thanks to the distribution of all his freebies. The rest of the day I started working on the slides for the April Power Point. I divided the topics we wanted to include between myself and the other two interns and started working on my own. The April slides are very similar to the March ones, with the addition/removal of some slides and so we chose to only reuse some of the slides we had already made. There's no point in making the exact same slides again, so creating this PowerPoint shouldn't take long. Friday 3/22: Today I spent the day finishing up my slides for the April Power Point. I also continued to work on my capstone project. I wanted to start this project sooner rather than later, as it is a very important part of my graduation requirement. I'm someone who doesn't do well under pressure, so the sooner I start working, the better. I will reach out to Megan soon to discuss the conceptual structure of my article, so that I can make sure I choose the right one. Today I went about my normal condom/flu kit stocking chores, making sure the waiting room was stocked for the weekend. Week 10: 3/25-3/29 Monday 3/25: Today I spent the day finishing up the remaining tasks I was assigned last week, to prepare for this week's meeting. I finished making the rest of my slides for April's PowerPoint so I could show them at the meeting. Even today I did my normal condom/flu kit refill job. The weekly staff meeting was held at 3pm where we were given our new tasks for the week. Tuesday 3/26: Today I started the day by making the recommended changes to my caffeine brochure. Even though the Caffeine Health Center won't be live for a few weeks, we wanted the brochure to be ready so we didn't have to rush. In addition to this I also made the recommended changes to my April slides, so that they could be published at the beginning of the month. Today I also went out and brought condoms to some places, to fill the containers we have there. Wednesday 3/27: Today I started the day by meeting with Megan, to discuss the different parts of the Capstone project. I wanted to get started and work on my assignment as soon as possible, as the end of the semester can be a very stressful time and I didn't want to rush anything. After meeting her I was able to get an idea of what I needed to do, so today I worked on some of those things. I also helped Anthony with his food safety brochure, as he was a little confused about what it should look like. I finished the day by completing the job of refilling the condom/flu kit. I also put together giveaways for the HPV health center that was supposed to take place on Thursday but, due to conflicts, was canceled. The freebies included two condoms and two sets of lube in one case. We are rescheduling this health center and so these items will all be ready whenever we decide to run it. Thursday 3/28: Today I spent the day working on packaging more flu kits and working on my capstone project. Even though we stopped handing out flu kits this morning, my supervisors want us to put together the rest of the kits we have the materials for, so that it will be easier for them to move in the fall. Since I rarely get to attend packing parties because I work most evenings,I try to do my part during the week by putting together about 30 each day. I continued to work on my capstone, completing some research and putting everything together. I ended the day by going out and taking condoms to a few spots on campus, to fill the containers we leave there. Friday 3/29: Today I spent the day packing more flu kits and working on my capstone. Since the week was pretty slow, I thought it would be the best time for these activities. I also went to a Barnes Center student committee meeting, to offer ideas and feedback for merging schools in the fall. Since I am a student, I had a pretty good idea of what would be the best ways to interest students and inform them about what the Barnes Center will offer next semester. After this meeting, I spent the rest of the day finishing what I had been working on. Week 11: 4/1-4/5 Monday 4/1: Today I started the day at 8:30, as we were asked to come for a presentation on an HIV prevention drug. During this presentation, the drug and everything that healthcare professionals should be aware of (such as the prevention rates it causes, the symptoms, how students can pay for it, etc.) were discussed. Afterwards we had an early meeting with our supervisors, as we needed to leave early. During this meeting, we talked about the different events we would participate in/organize this week and those in the coming weeks. We were given some tasks to do during the week. Tuesday 4/2: Today we had our HPV awareness health center in Whitman, which went decently. What we found was that students were not as interested in talking about a sexual topic, as they are with other topics. The prizes were condom cases with condom/lube inside, and several students didn't even want to get one even though they entered. This is a good example of what awkwardness around the topic of sex looks like, even if students are having sex, that doesn't mean they want everyone to know. We didn't have a great turnout and had to resort to handing out some freebies just so we could get rid of them. Aside from this event, I spent the day working on a portion of my capstone paper, as well as dropping off condoms at a few locations on campus. Wednesday 3/4: Today I started the day with our monthly staff meeting. During this meeting, however, I was asked to give a presentation about my capstone project and what I had discovered. I've also included some of the advice I thought I'd offer, as they might be interested. Based on the feedback I received from my presentation, everyone seemed to appreciate it. Afterwards, several healthcare professionals came up to me and told me that they enjoyed the presentation and thought I had chosen a really good topic. In addition to the staff meeting, I worked on organizing some things in our office and put together some of the kits we were asked to make. In addition to making some flu shot kits, I also put together some condom kits that will be distributed at Mayfest. Our supervisor informed us that over 1500 of these condom kits needed to be made, so it would be a good idea to start making them as soon as possible. Thursday 4/4: Today I spent most of the day at the Sexual Violence Awareness Fair at the dinner table. We were asked to meet with one of the health services doctors, to help inform the students about the differentexams/tests/support we offer to students experiencing sexual violence. This event was not very popular because we had no students. No one came near our table, except to take some of the free pens and candy we were giving away. I think the lack of participation was due to the fact that few tables were giving away anything other than pens/stickers and the topic we were covering. Sexual violence is not a topic that can be talked about casually, it is a very sensitive topic for many people. Even if the students who came by Schine had seen the tables and what we were talking about, I doubt they would have come and started talking to us about it. In addition to this event, I spent the rest of the day preparing everything so that I would leave no stone unturned before returning home. Friday 4/5: I didn't return today because I went home for the weekend. Week 12: 4/8-4/12 Monday 4/8: Today I went in and finished some of the homework left over from the previous week. We had our weekly meeting with our supervisors from 3 to 4:30 pm where we discussed the next week's events. Today I also continued working on my capstone project. Tuesday 9/4: Today we had our health center with Anthony, whose topic was food safety. The event was a success and we managed to attract a fair number of people to attend. After returning from this event, I spent the rest of the day working on my capstone. I have also put together some more Mayfest flu kits and condom kits, as they are both kits we have been asked to continue making. Wednesday 4/10: I finished my final article today, with just some revisions to do. This was a relief for me, since I had been working on it for so long. I'll go in later and make some changes to the document. I also continued to make flu kits and condom kits. Not much happened today as we were preparing for the GYT events that would occur over the next couple of days. Thursday 11/4: Today was the first of two GYT days and we successfully reached our limit (of 75 students) towards the end of the day. This event is extremely popular and it seems that many students came in groups rather than coming consistently throughout the day. There were points where we would have no students (or only one/two) for a long period of time, and then at other points more than 10 students would arrive at once. This is likely due to class times and the fact that students are likely to arrive when they are out or have finished classes for the day. We expected to see a larger number of students on Friday, as most students have no classes. Friday 4/12: Today was the second and final day of GYT and we reached our limit (75 more students) around 3pm. We had to turn away quite a few students, even after allowing 11 more students to be tested after the limit of 150. We saw that many students came with friends, which is why the numbers increased so quickly. The entire event ran very smoothly, with few problems (at least problems that were within our control). The students seemed satisfied with the event and it should definitely be done again in future semesters. If possible, they should try to increase their limit, so that more students can get tested. Even by increasing the limit from 150 students over two days to 175, we wouldn't have to turn away so many and could therefore help improve the sexual health of more individuals. Week 13: 4/15-4/19 Monday 4/15: Today we spent the day putting everything back in order.
