Abstract— This document aims to explain the effective use of Google Classroom for online lab work submission. Practical knowledge is one of the major attributes of the graduate and is achieved effectively through laboratory work. The purpose of this article is to highlight the improvement of the quality of laboratory work through the online submission of laboratory work by students and the effective and transparent implementation of laboratory rubrics by the laboratory course instructor. A comparative study of two different classes, one with online lab presentation and the other with the traditional approach is also discussed based on grades and originality of work presented in the lab, along with some additional benefits. Laboratory learning is an important part of the curriculum and helps students gain practical knowledge. “Learning by doing” is the main idea behind organizing a laboratory course. The laboratory course is an integral part of the teaching learning process especially in technical education. The lab course helps them understand the concept better and also allows them to explore their idea individually as well. In a theory lesson we always discuss a design problem. However, implementation issues and design gaps can only actually be found after implementing it in the lab. Therefore, the effectiveness of the laboratory course is very evident, and therefore it is necessary to take adequate measures to ensure that the objective behind conducting a laboratory course is achieved and the learning process should be such that every effort and contribution of each individual student should be significantly visible. This will in turn result in an effective and more transparent evaluation. The traditional process of submitting laboratory work is via a laboratory diary or laboratory log and the evaluation will depend primarily on the quality of the paper copy of the subsequently submitted laboratory work and timely submission. So, the main loophole in this system was that the lab work would be submitted later and thus it would give the students the option to copy from his peers if the problem statement was the same or ask for help from some fellow instead of taking efforts during the actual lab time. Therefore, it was not possible to establish students' actual understanding through the grades received. Additionally, keeping track of the number of times a particular work was resubmitted due to changes or corrections was difficult or impossible in the above-mentioned approach. remove the above-mentioned obstacles and improve the evaluation process a technique has been adopted where students present laboratory work during the laboratory course in a Google classroom and the related work which includes some calculations, justifications or post-lab questions shortly after. The teacher's first task is to create an online workbook where students can submit their work. In this article we used Google Classroom as a tool for students to submit their work. Google Classroom has the features that allow the teacher toshare resources with students, create common assignments, accept individual file uploads for the same assignment and individual assessments, it also allows the teacher and student to publish posts that all members of the class can respond to. A further advantage of this tool was that it was also possible to add a peer teacher to the same class. Creating, Submitting, and Grading via Google Classroom Google Classroom is one of the applications where anyone with a Google account can open a Google Classroom. After creating the Google Classroom, students can be invited to participate in the classroom via email or purchase by sharing the class code (as shown in fig1). The lab manual with general instructions and lab reports for each lab can be uploaded to Google Classroom for student reference. For the submission of each lab work, two assignments were created and were referred to as Part 1 and Part 2. Students were instructed to submit Part 1 by the end of the lab, and this was ensured by assigning the deadline to the assignment through one of the Google Classroom features. Part 1 included observations and results. Part 2 of the assignment had to be submitted within a set time and included related documentation such as calculations, graphs, conclusions drawn, or post-lab questions. The teacher could evaluate the laboratory work at any time since it was always available on the cloud. The documents uploaded by the students also had a timestamp which helped the teacher to effectively implement the timely submission rubric efficiently. The teacher could also inform the students to rework the assignment returning a lower grade and the student could also resubmit the same, recording everything via Google Classroom. Timely assessment by teachers was also recorded which helped quantify the term continuous assessment used in evaluating laboratory work. At the end of the course, collected information on students' work and grades was available and could be extracted into a downloadable Excel sheet.B. Comparison of Online Lab Work Submission under Contract and the Traditional Approach Effective Individual Presentation: Since the individual had to submit the first part of his/her lab by the end of the lab, the student had very little opportunity to copy the work of others. Furthermore, in the case of the software simulation labs, each individual student was told to associate a unique variable with his or her unique roll-no and in the case of the hardware labs the handwritten observations and annotated results had to be uploaded. Ease of Evaluation and Implementation of Rubrics: The laboratory course for which we implemented this approach had a weight of 25. Furthermore, the evaluation using this tool has become more transparent. Effective and Continuous Evaluation of Laboratory Work Since the return of grades by the laboratory teacher was also associated with the timestamp, the teacher was also obligated to complete the evaluation in a timely manner.
