Topic > Textual Analysis of Lageng's Indigenous Songs

Songs, consequently, are considered as another communication platform, where a connection occurs between the composer and the listener and the text becomes the tool that conveys the message . As underlined by Dallin (2004), “music (or singing) is composed of two elements; the sounds and the lyrics”. Although the two elements are interconnected, they are nevertheless treated differently in an analysis. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an Original Essay In a song, the lyrics are said to be the central element that makes the piece more effective. As stated, “texts are often easier to obtain and process than audio data…” (Braumann and Kluter, 2002; Brainbridge et al., 2003). Furthermore, listeners who do not have much knowledge of music theory rely primarily on the written text (lyrics) to interpret the message of the song. Dallin (2004) further states that "lyrics are written as a form of interaction between the writer and the listener, most often carrying a message with the purpose of motivating the listeners... this purpose is rooted in the cultural context of these people …” The lyrics are the carrier of the message and often give the identity of the songs. When the lyrics are identified, the background or origin of the song is deduced (where it comes from and who wrote it). differ in the type of message the writer wants to imply. They want to convey a message about love, they write a love song. If they want to praise the Lord, they write gospel songs. (Firduas, 2013) It is also faithful to the cultural or indigenous song. Indigenous (cultural) songs can convey the cultural identities and historical origins of a certain indigenous group or even the diachronic background of a certain place by describing it in the song lyrics. According to Milroy (2001), “Indigenous music is a voice that transcends borders, it is the true voice of the country because it is tied to the land, enriches the nation and shows the true identity of the nation”. As mentioned, the indigenous song of a certain place reflects the lifestyles and identities of its people. Therefore, the analysis of indigenous song will help the cultural group member to remember their cultural belonging to express their indigenous heritage - from the people living from the past, in the present and up to the future. This study will delve into the cultural distinction of Bukidnon by analyzing the textual styles of different indigenous songs found in Lageng. According to Balane (2013), the Lageng is a collection of fourteen (14) traditional songs of the seven hill tribes of Bukidnon. The word “Lageng” is a binukid term meaning “voice”. The album includes the compositions and performance of Talaandig's Waway Saway with its three songs; "Inay Bilun", "Dilig" and "Kulaman", "Banug Ha Aglayang-layang" by Michael Ysalina and "Gali" by Higaonon, Louella Nacua also from Higaonon with her songs "Balagon", "Ag Kabubuhat Do'y Bubungan", “Tribu Ko, Tribu Mo”. The album also featured performances of "Kahilawan Binuwan", "Tumandok Ta Dini Bukidnon", "Panimbalay Hu Bata Buwa Buwa" and "Sae-Ha Bata" by the daughter of a Talakag chief, Jewel Yen Pocol, and "Panampulot ” by Madelyn Palasol and Estrella Venus, both members of the Baes Council and Tribal Women of Bukidnon. The last track of the album is performed by the collaboration of Ysalina M., Pocol J. and Nacua L., all members of BSU Chorale with their song titled "Kuku Tangkugo". As mentioned by Johnny Cabreira (2013) in his interview in MindaNews with Walter I. Balane that the album is the voice of destitute people cultivating their "culture that transcends time and the progress of civilizationmodern culture that echoes the spirit of the people of Bukidnon". Unfortunately, today's generation prefers to listen to songs from other cultures or, worse, another country. They are more attached to songs that describe lustful or blasphemous lyrics than those songs that represent their indigenous heritage. One of the reasons why most of this generation prefer modern music is because of the language barrier, most indigenous songs are written in Binukid. Therefore, people have difficulty understanding the meaning of the song. In this study, the researcher will attempt to discover the meaning of the song by analyzing the lyrics The Lageng is one of the cultural artifacts that can best describe and reflect the Bukidnon people, and also the best tool to use in this study , the researcher will reveal the essence of the different indigenous Lageng songs through the analysis of the written text or lyrics. According to Frey et al (1999), textual analysis is the method used by communication researchers to describe and interpret the characteristics of a recorded or visual message. Furthermore, the purpose of textual analysis is to describe the content, structure and functions of the message contained in a text (Frey et.al, 1999). As emphasized, textual analysis is not just the analysis of text but rather is a researcher's activity. methodology for collecting data to understand the ways of a particular member of various cultures and subcultures to know their sense and how they belong to the culture in which they acted. Therefore, a textual analysis will provide ample information to researchers working on cultural studies, more specifically in sociological and philosophical studies. A textual analysis is a broad scope in the analysis of a piece of writing, it can include structure, length, linguistic styles, etc. In this study, the researcher will focus only on the linguistic style, especially on the figurative and suissi speeches used by the composers. A linguistic style is the way the author composes the song and sometimes refers to the vocal identity of the composer. According to Sumardjo (1988), style is the way of expressing language or expressing power or both at the same time... power expresses the idea that language is a simile, a metaphor, a personification and a paradox, an irony, an understatement and an exaggeration. This implies that linguistic style refers to the aesthetics of composition using figurative languages. A figurative language is a way of expressing thoughts through language so that the language seems imaginative (Keraf, 2010). In other words, the use of figurative language is the only way for the author to develop the written text or texts so that they become more interesting and notable. The use of deixis will also be covered in this study. According to Saeed (2009), deixis is a technical term (from classical Greek deiknym) meaning “to show” or “to indicate”. It also discusses that deixis is a study of interpreting the relationship of a situation to words, phrases, and characteristics spoken in a sentence (Saeed, 2009). By analyzing the deixis in Lageng's songs, the researcher will be able to clarify the different characteristics of the poor people described in the song lyrics. This study is important not only for researchers but also for the people of Bukidnon as this will come to the heart of historical news of Bukidnon. This will also give more importance to Bukidnon culture as the traditional songs that qualify to represent Bukidnon will be discussed. This study can be the anchor for future researchers who will dig and find historical or cultural anthropology by investigating cultural artifacts such as cultural songs. Keep in mind:.
