Topic > Letter to Aunt Bessie

November 1906 Chicago Dear Aunt Bessie, We live in a time of growth and where politicians are creating laws to help our society. There have been many protests, amendments, political machines, reforms and muckracers to expose what is wrong with our country. There are a lot of movements going on. I believe that the movements for child labor, living conditions and women's suffrage are the most worthy. I think the $600,000 should go to the Living Conditions Movement. Say no to plagiarism. Houses collapsed easily. Many people are homeless and supposedly one in three people were on the verge of starvation in 1904. Many children often slept in “sleeping huts”. This reform will also help the homeless in our country. Aunt Bessie, I believe this reform deserves $600,000 because no one deserves to live without shelter or a roof over their head. I believe $300,000 should go to the child labor movement. The child labor movement is trying to stop children from working by creating strict laws. No child should work if he or she is under 14 years old. Industrialization did not create child labor but contributed to the needs of child workers. Working children are usually 10-14 years old. However, some children are as young as seven years old. Some kids had to lie about their age just so they could have a job to help them with their family. Children often come home sick, injured, and have worked long hours. This also prevents children from receiving an education. It also decreases the possibility of having another generation of children. I believe this movement deserves $300,000 because children don't need to work in jobs like mining or long hours; I think the $100,000 should go to the Women's Suffrage Movement. The women's suffrage movement is trying to give women the right to vote. Many people are tortured for no reason. In 1848 there was the Seneca Falls Convention to support women's rights. Two very important women are helping us succeed in this dream. Those two women are Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Women are always judged based on their gender, we should be able to vote even if we are women. We are no different from men. I believe this movement deserves a chance and $100,000 because we deserve a vote.
