Changes in Technology, Impact on Media, and Impact of Media on SocietyIntroductionTechnology has certainly changed over the years. In recent years, technological changes have increased at an exponential rate. Among the most defining changes in technology are those that have enabled better service delivery by media service providers. This work explores technological changes in the migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting and changes in Internet technology. Changes from analog to digital transmission The traditional transmission method relied heavily on analog transmission. At first, television broadcasting was monochrome, but later changes to color broadcasting reinvigorated television broadcasting. Analog transmission offered limited bandwidth for transmission. This meant that only a handful of television stations could be accommodated in the analog broadcast medium. However, the digital platform had numerous advantages. For starters, the bandwidth is large enough to accommodate an innumerable number of stations making it possible to host broadcast stations large and small. Initially the technology provided monopolistic programming, which has since changed paving the way for the emergence of other broadcasters. The digital platform offers the opportunity to provide high definition programming. The media have adopted this mode of programming making it possible to manipulate the viewer's focus of interest by blurring some regions and emphasizing others, as they see fit. For example, during the last presidential election, media critics lashed out at subjective campaign coverage. During public debates between presidential candidates, the media gave more emphasis to President O...... middle of paper ...... national media houses. Social media has enabled greater connectivity and reach through the creation of mobile applications that allow users to view content from their mobile devices. Communities in remote areas are able to stay in touch with current trends through social media. Social media is also used to share important events. For example, following large tsunamis, tornadoes or earthquakes, people have been able to reunite with loved ones through social media. Conclusion In conclusion, it is clear that technological progress affects the way multimedia content is packaged and transmitted. In some cases, these developments have made it possible for media houses to use a subjective emphasis on their content causing social uproar. On the other hand, social media content is proving to be highly unpredictable and increasingly useful on various fronts.
