Shawver 7Michael Jackson's “Earth Song”, written in the mid-1990s, is a protest song in which he refers to key issues that were occurring during this time period. Michael Jackson was very passionate about these issues and felt it was time to take a stand. Jackson's goal was to inform humans of the destruction that was being wrought daily. The protest song "Earth Song" by Michael Jackson talks about the deterioration of the Earth due to violence and demonstrates Jackson's unique perspective on the grave environmental crisis that was occurring. Environmental issues, global warming and greenhouse gases, were huge during the 1990s. The gases that enter the air daily from factories, cars, etc. they then begin to drastically deteriorate the earth's ozone, increasing the amount of damage done to the earth. “Global temperatures are rising and this has begun to affect the natural world” (Rooney, 34). Ozone's main responsibility is to keep the Earth at a constant temperature. When the temperature becomes too high, the abundant amount of ultraviolet rays released into the environment would become excessive. Regular means of reproduction are therefore destroyed, from plants to animals. “Most scientists agree that increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are causing temperatures to rise, with potentially disastrous consequences for the world's population” (Rooney, 34). The amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the air in the 1990s consisted mainly of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. Because of these fossil fuels and the careless acts of businesses and people in general, the Earth was being damaged more and more every day. Not only was Earth suffering during this decade... middle of paper... ted. This amendment allowed him to talk about religion and express his opinion. Furthermore, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, the nation's citizens may have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of "happiness." People have committed and continue to violate the Earth, which can make others very unhappy. Some in the world are very eco-friendly and earth-based. Many love trees, trails, mountains, lakes, rivers, etc. When they are harmed by others, there isn't much left to enjoy. We as a nation have the right to have a fulfilling and happy life. If you take away people's happiness, you are also taking away our rights. Michael Jackson hoped to make a change and felt it was his job to take a stand. He talked about real problems during this time period and made it clear that problems can be solved if people take the step towards resolution.
