For over twenty years, gun control has been a major topic in the United States. With the countless number of public shootings that have occurred, our country is beginning to question our Second Amendment which states that "a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and carry arms, shall not be infringed.” It was adopted into the United States Constitution on December 15, 1790. It essentially stated that people have the right to keep and bear arms. These rights were considered “natural rights” or “rights given by God.” Written to remind the government not to try to prevent people from enjoying this right. Should we completely eliminate this right to prevent mass murder in public places? citizens feel uncomfortable about having no protection and having their privileges taken away because of other people and cruel decisions. Although times have changed since the amendment was passed on December 15, 1791, citizens Americans still believe that it is mandatory to own firearms and have them in their daily lives. Public shootings occurred in the early 1700s when the first school shootings occurred Pontiac's Rebellion on July 26, 1764. Four Lenape American Indians entered the school near what is now Greencastle, Pennsylvania, shot the teacher and they killed nine or ten children. Shootings like those that occurred at Virginia Tech, Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary, the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado; all have affected the country in a drastic sense and have really influenced us Americans to take the rest and do......half of the paper......waiting to be approved explaining that background checks have been expanded of gun owners or potential gun owners had to be made. It turns out the Senate killed that bill. President Obama pushed for gun restrictions after the devastating shootings that occurred and blames the Senate for failing to expand background checks. Without the full cooperation of both sides of this debate, nothing will ever be resolved. Banning guns won't completely stop crime. This has just turned into a war against the rights of the individual enshrined in the Constitution. Tighter regulation of guns is not the solution, but harsher punishments could be. Gun control is not the answer to this problem and this just needs to be accepted so that the crime rate can finally decrease and everyone can be happy that something is being done about this situation..
