Greene and Greene are renowned for their contributions to the artistic and craftsmanship evolution of architecture and created a widely recognized "Native California" style. Their work has influenced the artistic aesthetic of the American Art and Crafts movement to this day. Charles and Henry Greene were two brothers whose love of tools, materials and craftsmanship blossomed into one of the best-known architectural forces of the 20th century. In high school, the two took up carpentry and metalworking. Thanks to their early training at the prestigious MIT in Boston, they were able to join several prominent Boston architectural firms, some of which supported the well-known design principles of Henry Hobson Richardson. They eventually ended up in Pasadena where they opened their own architectural firm in 1894. Greene and Greene's office reached its peak productivity in the period 1902-1910 with residential design taking center stage. They had a passion for the decorative arts and designed their furniture in a more ergonomic way than most furniture made in that period.
