There is plenty of evidence from studies of covert misbehavior in which young people admit to behavior that spans the full range of delinquent acts. Most minors who confess to these acts indicate that they have had no dealings with the police or the courts. Even in areas with high rates of official delinquency, the true extent of youth misconduct is far greater than is apparent from police or court records (3). Youth crime is a major problem around the world. If juveniles are to be prosecuted as adults, the legal capacities of juveniles should be comparable to those of adults, and if individuals perceive that juveniles who commit crimes as adults with adult consequences are better able to assist in their own defense or understand the charges against them compared to teenagers who do not commit these crimes are currently unknown. If parents monitored their children more and were involved in their social life, the crime rate could decrease. Youth crime is a growing problem that endangers virtually every American.
