To receive many of their freedoms, people in both Huxley's London and the United States choose to embrace the strict laws of their government. Beyond that, people in both societies negatively influence the world by distracting themselves with technology, ranging from cell phones to movies. This prevents these people from making scientific or artistic progress. The 1984 government shares with the United States the quality of withholding information from its people, however, while absolute rule motivates the Party, the well-being of the people motivates the US government.
