In addition to health and safety problems, factory farming also poses a threat to the environment. Anders Nordgren states in his article published by the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics, “…since livestock production is a major contributor to climate change, we should undertake mitigation measures […] However, technological solutions do not seem sufficient in the sector of livestock farming, leaving us the possibility of reducing the production and consumption of meat". (Nordgren, August 2012.) Harmful gases, such as methane, are released due to irresponsible manure disposal. These greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere also contribute to climate change and global warming. Negligent disposal of manure also causes health and social problems. Because factory farms confine a large mass of animals to a small plot of land, managing animal waste is a crucial issue. “In an intensive farm with 35,000 pigs, over 4 million kilos of feces and urine are produced every week. This equates to over 200 million pounds of waste each year – on just one farm,” (Grace Communications Foundation, 2014). According to Wendee Nicole in a journal published by Environmental Health Perspective, there is an irrational difference between the treatment and disposal of human waste in animal waste. “While human sewage is treated with chemical and mechanical filtration before being released into the environment, CAFOs funnel waste from pig farms into pits or lagoons, where it is stored untreated until applied to land.” (Nicole, June 2013). When manure is cleaned from facilities, it is usually collected, mixed with water and stored in open lagoons. When necessary, it is then spread out...... in the middle of the sheet ......p.121-a182 [online 1 June 2013]Nordgren, Anders. “Ethical issues in climate change mitigation: the option to reduce meat production and consumption” Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics.
