During 1607-1753 Colonial America was established. Starting in 1492, when Christopher Columbus discovered the lands beyond England, people were launched into a new life. A group of Puritans left England to escape the growing stress of the English government. Seeking freedom, both in religion and government, they sailed to America. Their main goal was not only to start a new life, but also to convert the savages; "Indians." With this move they encountered many difficulties. Starting a new life, they had to learn a new political, social, educational and above all religious way of life. Controversy rages today over the importance of Christianity to colonists in the years before the American Revolution. When the Pilgrims moved to America, they hoped to find freedom of religion and government. Therefore, when they left England, King James 1 wrote statutes and laws that they were to observe while in America. Because technically he was still in charge, but now from afar. One of the many papers written by the king read: “and knowing full well that when a people is assembled the Word of God requires that to maintain the peace and unity of such a people, there should be an orderly and dignified government established according to God, for to order and dispose of the affairs of all the people at all seasons as circumstances shall require; let us therefore associate and unite to be as one public state or commonwealth, and, for ourselves and for our successors and for those who shall be united with us at any time hereafter, let us enter into combination and confederation together, to maintain and preserve the freedom and purity of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus which we now profess” (Conne's fundamental orders...... middle of paper ......d countless times throughout the colonies during the three decades of revival, the peculiar Reformation vision of providence and grace were clearly proposed. Once again, God was the center of their life, and everything else revolved around him. Many authorities today say that America was not founded on the worldview Biblical. There are some historians who say that Christianity was insignificant or harmful. This controversy involves Columbus to the Puritan Christians. However, from everything that has just been stated, one can easily see how important the Bible was to the colonists. In those days, the biblical worldview was the only view out loud. It was the tallest and most important book in the world. The Bible was the only sovereign foundation of colonial America. This is the only reason America, “land of the free and home of the brave,” has existed for so long.
