If someone asked you what the most spoken language in the world is, you would probably say the answer is English. With the rapid growth of information technology and globalization around the world, English has become the international language. Most students around the world learn English because they think that learning English would give them more opportunities to get a better job in the future. And some of them even travel to English-speaking countries to gain practical English skills. And it can be safely said that English is becoming one of the compulsory subjects among the younger generation. The spread of English is useful as a global communication tool, but it could also be seen as a double-edged sword because it would influence people politically, culturally and socially by expanding linguistic and cultural imperialism and sexism. Brumfit points out that the spread of English is mainly caused by two main factors, British colonialism and the expansion of the US economic market. These two factors have contributed to linguistic imperialism, which is one of the negative effects of the spread of English. First, under British colonialism in the 19th century, some countries such as India and Singapore came under the influence of English-speaking countries. As a result, both countries still retain traces of British imperialism as their subsidiary official language is English. They did not completely lose their language, however it is clear that their vernaculars were weakened by the use of English. Second, the spread of English occurred as a result of the expansion of the economy in the United States. As markets in the United States have become enormously huge, people are more likely to come into contact with English materials, such as pop...... middle of paper...... avoid gender stereotypes because sexism would limit the possibilities of women (or men) in many ways. In conclusion, the spread of English could be seen as a Trojan horse with respect to the political, cultural and social effects on non-English speakers. In general, nowadays English is used as a tool of international communication between people around the world, but it could also be seen as a reflection of linguistic hegemony, cultural dominance and sexism in English-speaking countries. I believe that the effect of using English depends on how much a person recognizes the background of English and applies it to himself. Therefore, when acquiring the language, it is important to understand the culture of a particular country and consider the impact of the language on various societies, in order to help develop your health knowledge..
