Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies is probably one of the most shocking novels I've ever read. I read the book when I was in elementary school as a member of the literature club. At the time I was so young that I couldn't understand what message the book conveyed, but I was still very shocked by the ending of the story. Now I have reread the book once again and this time it amazed me even more because I know the book very deeply. Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding had studied natural science until he changed his major to literature in his second grade (SparkNotes). He was in a World War II and while he was facing a war, he experienced the darkness of human behavior and it greatly influenced his thinking about human nature (ELEpstein). He decided to write novels instead of teaching after the war and his first novel Lord of the Flies, his masterpiece, amazed the world of literature. From the success of the book Golding gained a huge reputation as a writer and was able to go on to write several novels. The story begins with a boy named Ralph who is a handsome boy with a stocky build. The book describes that a group of schoolchildren accidentally landed on the island while being evacuated by plane to safety from a nuclear war. In Lord of the Flies an entire story develops on the tropical island focusing the events between Ralph and the other characters around him. At the beginning of the story Ralph, who is mentioned first among all the characters in the book, looks around the island where SU is located. Then he finds another boy with glasses who introduces himself as Piggy. They discover that the plane that was evacuating them made an emergency landing on the island and is destroyed. They wander the beach… middle of paper… the same way dictators control crowds in the story. The wickedness of boys is done by another evil that can also be done by another evil. Jack might be good at first too. The root of evil absorbed by Jack and his hunters is actually ignorance. They weren't as smart as Piggy or Ralph, so they didn't know the importance of signal fire. Because of their stupidity, they could not recognize right or wrong and simply followed their instincts like animals. Socrates said: “The only good is that knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.” All human beings are naturally good. Destruction, violence, madness, irrational acts of evil are caused by their ignorance. SparkNotes Editors. "SparkNote on Lord of the Flies." SparkNotes.com. SparkNotes LLC. 2007.
