As we can imagine there are two sides when it comes to the controversy of whether the flag should be raised or whether it should remain lowered. Grady A. Brown, a Democrat and descendant of a Confederate soldier, says the flag should remain lowered and be preserved in a museum. Brown states, "I want my friends back home, on both sides of the issue, to know that I'm doing what I'm going to do, vote to take down the flag, because I think that's, in God's eyes, the right thing to do. " Brown insists that the right thing to do is to keep the flag down because it offends many people, and there are other ways to honor the troops who fought in the war. Additionally, Neal A. Collins, who is a Republican, also argues that the flag should be lowered. From Collins' perspective, “I support the removal of this Confederate battle flag, as much as I respect it. It is time for our state to use this opportunity to heal.” In making this comment, Collins argues that we should lower the flag, move forward, and focus on bigger things that are happening right now. When Collins said that the state should use this opportunity to heal, he meant that they should focus on things that can actually affect everyone in the future and stop trying to change the meaning of a flag used in 1800..
