Main character says, "Look for my flashlight under the seat, boy" (Pancake 87). The narrator then notes, “He leans forward, grasping under the seat, and his head is turned towards me. But now I'm too tired and I don't want to clean the seat” (Pancake 87). From the context we can observe that he begins his trial by killing the hitchhiker but then decides not to. After meeting the hitchhiker on the trip, he sees that he no longer wants to kill him. Then, the main character comments, “He jumps to the ground and I watch him walk backwards, flipping” (Pancake 87-88). It can be concluded that he finally realizes that these hitchhikers deserve to live despite his recent losses.
