Technical advancement in the field of telecommunications The transition to the information society is driven by the market for new information and communication technologies and services. While the large number of technologies and services and their suppliers bring with them expectations of greater economic growth, there is growing concern about the social, ethical, cultural, political and economic aspects of future society. There has long been considerable interest in the prospects of achieving "sustainable development" through the use of telecommunications technologies. The generally accepted definition of sustainable development is that “current generations should meet their own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. While the term sustainability has often been used in reference to the environment, INDUSTRY ENVIRONMENTRestructuring at an industrial level is inevitable. Major telecommunications providers such as AT& T and WorldCom are responding to a major business model shift. The problem is weak long-distance revenues, declining market, share, reduced profits and lack of strategic direction. The long-distance business is largely a commodity business that lacks the capacity for strategic growth. Deregulation has hurt this product segment for major carriers because it allows Regional Bell Companies (RBCs) to offer long-distance service to regional customers and bypass traditional long-distance providers. But competition also comes from Independent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs), which are subject to much less stringent regulatory hurdles and requirements. We believe that the choices our society makes over the next decade will have a dramatic effect on what possible changes actually occur in the decades that follow. EURESCOM projects in this area will provide knowledge to help us make these choices wisely, based on careful reflection about the values that are important to us and the kind of world we would like our children to live in.
