Perhaps the most controversial of these occurs when discussing the doctoral level of education for professional nurses. According to Zaccagnini and White (2014), due to the increasing complexity of patient populations, the need for a higher level of education is becoming increasingly evident for nurses interested in furthering their careers. The Doctorate of Nursing Practice was established to meet this need and will likely be the required degree for all professional nurses (Joel, 2013). However, the title of these nurses as “Doctors of Nursing Practice” has created confusion not only for patients, but for the professionals themselves. Zaccagnini and White (2014), explain that, although nurses have a doctoral degree, the title “Doctor” should only be reserved for doctors practicing in a healthcare facility.
