In the story the author describes their relationship as authentic and almost ordinary. The diction used in the conversation between Terri and Herb is very commanding and direct, without pretension. For example, Terri says, “Shitty weed, tell your story. If I wasn't in love with you. I'm damn sure I wouldn't be here in the first place, you bet” (Carver 11). The tone in Terri's voice is like if he was talking to someone he feels comfortable with and knows the limits he can use to approach him. When you tell someone you are in love with him, the tone of voice is usually strong and affectionate I love you she is strong and authoritative, she is aware of the love she feels for Herb and she is confident in it, everything Terri says is not censored the love she has for Herb is boundless and she is willing to support him even if she doesn't want to because that's what you do with people you love. After Terri's outburst, Herb says, "OK" (Carver 11) and continues with his story, he is clearly indifferent to the name Terri uses when addressing
