Today's famous Christmas celebration is far from what it was in its past. Many aspects led to the change of Christmas, however Charles Dickens, a Victorian era author, was probably the most influential in the change. There was a time when Christmas wasn't much more important than a normal holiday. Without the work of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Regency Christmas would not have changed to be what it is today. As we look at Regency Christmas, Christmas events in A Christmas Carol, new Christmas ideas, and the new Christmas today, we will form the real Christmas. Before we look at the new celebration of Christmas during the Victorian era in England, due to Mr. Dickens, we must review the pre-Victorian Christmas, or Regency period (1811-1820). The Regency period was contrary to popular belief, the first celebrations of Christmas were very different to the Christmas we all know and love today. This Christmas was much more boring with “Simple Decorations” according to Paula Wrightston. Unfortunately for the younger ones Wrightston says Regency Christmas was more of an adult affair. Not only were the traditions and age requirements different, but the actual dates also differed with the first day of the season running from December 24th through January 6th, making the Christmas season 12 days long (Wrightston). So far it seems that Dickens has made Christmas much more enjoyable for future generations. Although Early Christmas was different, some traditions never change.
