The jobs I would have available would have very low pay and would have almost no benefits. Jobs like nursing assistant, cashier, cook, waitress, housekeeping, retail, childcare, waiter, etc., are what I would normally find myself working at if I were poor. In terms of education, I would be more likely to underachieve in school and therefore more likely to continue to underachieve. I am also less likely to be one step ahead of people in my class if my parents are poor since they couldn't afford books or anything else that would help me be more educated in literature and math. In fact, according to a psychologist named McLoyd, "Recent research consistently reports that persistent poverty has more detrimental effects on IQ, academic achievement, and social-emotional functioning than transient poverty, with children experiencing both types of poverty they generally perform lower than those of never-poor children."
