Computers have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Everything about them, from the parts that make them up, to the things you can create with them. More specifically, the worlds you can create for others to immerse themselves in; being video games. While it seems pretty simple on the surface, the art of video game design and development has so many specific and crucial parts that go into the game you buy and play. Through research, I have gained more insight into each part of game design and the requirements needed to be successful in the field. RIT, or more formally known as Rochester Institute of Technology, is one of the most prestigious New Media Arts schools in the nation. Luckily for me, it's not more than 20 minutes from my house. RIT is where I plan to go to school after college. Although an expensive school (about $45,000 per year), RIT is in the top 5 on Princeton Review's list of Video Game Design schools. RIT is one of the best game design schools for one reason: it teaches students how to find their way and succeed. As my interviewee Jon Palmer said, (who is also an RIT graduate) you will get out of the program what you put into the program. It is a very self-guided course where much, if not all, of the work is done by the student. To prepare to enter RIT, you can begin basic computer programming such as HTML or Java. As time goes by, you can start programming real games and have your friends try them. While not the easiest to take, RIT is one of the best game design courses you could ask for. The job titles Video Game Designer or Video Game Developer both seem pretty surreal on the surface to the average person. ..... middle of paper ..... in such a big, selfish industry that they won't care unless you make it so they care.” This made me realize that in order to progress and be accepted in the gaming world, I needed to get my name out there and show everyone that I have the potential to do great things. Overall, the entire interview process was a humbling experience and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. After studying my chosen career in depth, I have discovered more than ever that this is the right career path for me. Even if I don't end up developing video games, I will most likely end up programming software or something like that. This has basically been my life goal, and to think that in less than 2 years I will be able to achieve that goal, it's astounding. In my opinion, computer game design, or anything to do with computers, will be the most interesting career anyone could choose to pursue..
