“Death of Baruch College freshman in Hazing ritual ruled murder,” was the headline in the NY Daily News on February 14, 2014. According to the NY Daily News, approximately 30 members of the fraternity They were at a rented house in the Pocono Mountains on Dec. 8, when Michael Deng died of severe head trauma after being repeatedly tackled in an icy yard while blindfolded and dragging 20 pounds of sand in a backpack while playing the so-called game of " glass ceiling" with his brothers. The hazing death is now officially a homicide with many suspects, but as of February 14, there has not been a single arrest. There are many things that can be debated as controversial issues on college campuses, but what I believe is an issue, which almost no one can argue about, should be hazing. Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities that involve harassment, abuse, or humiliation as a way to initiate a person into a group. In other words, it is another form of bullying that is considered a normal and acceptable occurrence on most college campuses. Many universities stand back and allow these rituals to happen, even going so far as to have hazing myths and facts on their websites, but only taking real action when things have gone too far and death occurs. There have been more than 140 deaths due to hazing since 1970 according to Hank Nuwer, a professor at Franklin College in Indiana, who has written four books on the subject. The most thought group that annoys individuals would have to be fraternities and sororities. Fraternities and sororities use this form of "torture" as a way to show incoming individuals the process in which power and control is exercised among group members, how new members are made to feel about... half of the paper... ...could stop if the students stuck together.
