Topic > Police Distrust in Police Case Study - 1671

As many people see in the news nowadays that some police officers have been seen on television and in videos that black males are being killed by white (male) officers. But what people don't know is that there are news stories that are biased because they will tell you what they want the public to know or what will get the public's attention. And this is what upsets the minority (race) because they think the officers intend to kill black males. On the contrary, what police officers try to do on a daily basis is make the street and the community a better place and they don't wake up in the morning thinking to themselves that they want to kill someone just for the fun of it. For example, many people believe that there should be justice. They will try to take revenge, burn and hurt those who don't believe what they say, like the retaliation in Ferguson, Missouri and New York. And the people burning buildings and stealing, killing, or injuring other people aren't even half the people in Ferguson: they're from different states. Not only that, but “racial and ethnic minorities' perceptions that the police lack legality and legitimacy, based largely on their interactions with the police, can lead to mistrust of the police.” And if the community thinks that officers are lawless and racist and abusing their power, then they won't want to interact or even call the police when someone is raped, killed, or robbed because they don't believe in the justice system. The community will be very affected because if they distrust the officers then they will take matters into their own hands and congress will have to quarantine and isolate them for their behavior thus giving them a time when they can stay out and a time when they cannot stay out. This also shows that “distrust of the police has serious consequences. This undermines the legitimacy of law enforcement and without legitimacy the police lose the ability and authority to function effectively.” This means that the officers will not make a difference in that community because no one in that community trusts them or lets them do their job because the officers will lose the authority they once had.
