Jeanette says her mother is homeless and searches through dumpsters. Jeanette, on the other hand, has Persian carpets and a leather armchair in her apartment (6). The writer wears pearls, while the mother looks for something to eat (6). Jeanette and her mother are extremely opposite because Jeanette's mother likes being homeless, and Jeanette worries about her parents being homeless. It is difficult for the writer to enjoy her apartment, without worrying that her parents are homeless (6). Jeanette's mother tells her not to worry about them and to tell people the truth about her parents' situation (26). The author states that her mother had dirt on her neck and that she made an effort to fix it (9). The title “A Woman on the Street” is an effective title for this selection because Walls does not mention who the woman is. Jeanette wants the audience to understand who the woman on the street is. A title is a name given to a story to identify or describe it. I think the writer should have a title that better describes the story. I am able to offer alternative titles, including “My Parents by a Dumpster,” “My Homeless Parents,” and “I'm Ashamed of My Children".
