Asian Americans are tied to the Asian homeland by ties of family or blood, but they are also inevitably immersed in American culture. Regardless of how close they are to their Asian heritage, Asian Americans may be viewed by white Americans as outsiders and are therefore treated differently. “Eye Contact” by Shawn Wong is an example of this and also suggests that Asian American alienation is not only prevalent among white Americans, but also among Asian Americans. While Asian Americans may often be conglomerated into a group to which they do not belong, they may also view each other as aliens seeking to assimilate into American society through various means. Wong proposes several aspects of Asian-American life: alienation of Asian-Americans by others, cultural diffusion of Asian and American, and separation from ethnic stereotypes.
