Position Paper The popularity of social media sites has increased significantly in recent years. It's fun to post pictures and statuses about upcoming events and cool things to do. It is easier for people to communicate on the Internet. However, these sites have a drawback. Studies have also shown that as social media increases, depression also increases. These sites may be fun but they have very negative aspects and teenagers are not left unscathed by the flaws. Kids post what they're doing outside and others feel the need to get out and do something too. It raises the issue of fear of missing out. Celebrities also use their own accounts which can be followed by anyone. Teens end up constantly comparing themselves to celebrities' appearances and bright, outgoing personalities. Studies have also shown that cyberbullying has become a much bigger problem as Internet usage has grown. All these different things to do with social media have led to children feeling depressed, ugly and lonely. Social media use has increased depression in today's teens. On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, people post photos and statuses of what they're doing. Documenting every move has become something of a fad. Just sitting at home, trying to relax, can be stressful because with all these posts, people can see a lot of things they could or should be doing. Am I missing something? This is a question that haunts the mind of every teenager trying to sit at home and read a book rather than go out to a party with friends. This is a big deal because it's not the events, parties, and number of friends that define a person. Teens need to take the time to sit back, relax, and do some self-actualization. You often… middle of paper… constantly compare yourself to others. When children feel like they can't become like people who are quite famous online, that's when eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia come into play to try to address their depression. Third, suicide and depression among teens have increased because cyberbullying on social media has reached an all-time high. Social media should be limited to teenagers to improve overall mental health. MLA Quotes “7 Telltale Signs Social Media Is Killing Your Self-Esteem.” Othernet. Np, nd Web.
