In “To Kill a Mockingbird” the trial scene clearly conveys that the town of Maycomb is prejudicial and racist towards Tom Robinson. The trial caught the attention of the city of Maycomb, and the outcome changed the community's opinion. Atticus Finch was the only lawyer who would handle the case and defend Tom Robinson. The case filed accused Tom of brutal assault and rape of an “innocent” white girl. As we learn more about Tom Robinson's background in the case, we discover that he was a poor, working-class African American who was just trying to do his job and was later wrongly convicted. At the beginning of the trial, Jem and Scout wanted to sneak into the courtroom to see and hear the trial. The first person they examined was Mr. Heck Tate, he was the first to arrive on the scene and he said when he arrived he found Mayella injured and beaten. When he asked her who had done this to her, she claimed that Tom Robinson had raped her. Atticus then cross-examined the witness who admitted that no doctor had been called and told him that Mayella's bruises were on the equipment....
