Why can't we have an equal marriage? Many states have actively banned gay marriage, but a handful of states have allowed same-sex couples to access civil marriage rights (Williams). A total of sixteen states have allowed same-sex marriage. The sixteen states that allow this are Massachusetts; Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Washington, Maryland, Maine, Rhode Island, Delaware, Minnesota, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Illinois. I believe all states should allow same sex marriage, because they cannot be as happy as the opposite sex. Massachusetts became the first state to allow gay marriage after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in a 4-3 opinion that a ban on same-sex marriage violated that state's constitution (Williams). The Massachusetts state government has decided not to allow same-sex couples to marry because this would violate the individual's personal liberty rights enshrined in the state constitution. There were eight same-sex couples in Connecticut who couldn't do that. obtain their marriage licenses. After being denied a marriage license, they argued that it violated the state constitution that discriminates against the same sex. They also argued that civil unions created a separate but not equal status for gay and lesbian citizens (Williams). In Massachusetts and Connecticut the state constitutions were being violated. In the sixteen states that have legalized same-sex marriage, the state government has deemed it unconstitutional to deny the right to marry people of the same sex. There are sixteen states that will allow same-sex marriage, but what about the others? You see a lot of gays and lesbians living one way when they're at home and then you see people living another way when they're at school. They go on to say that they don't live with their families so they don't think about changing them or trying to change the way they think. Let's not be bad and let's start supporting each other. Human beings are female and male. “Normally” they should be attracted to each other. But let's make one thing clear: no one is perfect and no one is normal. We all have different things that make us. We should be able to like who we want, we should be able to be with who we want to be with. We shouldn't change just because we're asked to or because they don't like the way we think. It is our body, our mind. No one in the world should be able to control us and tell us what to do and what not to do.
