Topic > Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault - 838

College campuses are notorious for sexual harassment, sexual assault, and even rape. Our group topic we chose was sexual assault behavior, which I narrowed down to sexual assault on college campuses. More and more students, both male and female, need to be aware of this threat. Some statistics that show how dangerous it can really be on a campus, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 boys are sexually assaulted. Counting all the girls in our class, 3 of them would hypothetically be raped during their college years. About 90% of sexual assaults go unreported out of fear. I didn't pick a specific case, as there are so many out there, but I believe that rape, assault, and harassment come from a different time in life. I believe some of these behaviors come from the media, movies, television shows and music. These different areas can make children, adolescents and adults understand that it is okay to treat women or men in a certain way. The theories I used to explain this type of behavior were social learning theory and general strain theory. And through the example I described, how people can learn this behavior, I will explain it through these paragraphs. Media is a huge thing that is part of our culture, you see it everywhere you turn or go. Something news related is always on TV, on your campus, or in a restaurant. The media shows the worst of people to everyone in the country, as there are rapists, predators, murderers, shootings, bomb threats, school shootings, presidential debates, wars and crises. If you want peace and comfort, I suggest you not watch the news. When the news talks about rape and sexual assault the situation can be pretty ugly, especially for the victim. The media can show and twi...... middle of paper ......not everyone is Beyonce or Britney Spears so it is degrading to many others to think that women or men feel this way is ridiculous. learning theory plays into this, it is how people will learn from media, movies, tv shows and songs that it is okay to act or speak a certain way towards a specific gender. It can also be about how their parents or siblings react to a certain type of media. Using general strain theory, coworkers can challenge how one behaves a certain way and how others feel like they should get over it or do the same thing. The world of college has become a dangerous place for everyone, and it was eye-opening for me to learn the statistics and stories of everything that happens on a college campus. I hope things change soon and it becomes an important topic at hand to protect people from this harmful crime.
